SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Photo take in the late 1800s, before the sphinx
had been completely excavated.
Today is the vernal equinox, the first day of Spring! Yay! From here on in, our days will get longer and summer is on the way. Of course, I'm in Florida right now and it's meant to be 83 degrees today. BUT, the important thing to note is that in my home near Portland, Oregon, hammock weather is on the way!

You know what's cool? The Great Sphinx of Giza faces due east, which means on the vernal equinox, it's pointing directly at the rising sun. And that's not all... just reading the wikipedia entry about the sphinx is really fascinating. I learned several things I didn't know. Because I'm not an Egyptologist.

In any case, winter is over, my friends! Unless you live in the southern hemisphere, in which case, apologies.

Also, fyi, Easter is always on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. This year, that means April 8th. Unless you're a member of an Orthodox church, in which case, Easter is determined by the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox, but it's done using the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar, meaning that Orthodox Easter is on April 15th this year.

And it's all based around TODAY. So... happy vernal equinox!
