Sleep Paralysis, spiritual attacks and human biology

I read this article last weekend and forgot to share it with you. It's a really fascinating look at biology, religion, the placebo effect and the "nocebo" effect, which I had never heard of before this article. It's also about how some Hmong men died as a result of sleep paralysis, which should be completely non-fatal (although terrifying). It's food for thought, for sure.

So... what do you think?

I experienced this once in Beijing. Notable perhaps because that Jen and I experienced it simultaneously. Not sure how that fits with the thesis here. Also very interesting is 'local biology'. For example, most mainland Chinese really are affected by whether or not they have adequately stuck to principles of Chinese medicine. Interesting article.

  2. Wow. Yes, taht's interesting and I think part of my question here is whether this is a scientifically valid thing that can be explained purely with science or if there is or could be a significant spiritual issue at work as well. It's food for thought for sure.

  3. I've had an experience where I guess it might have been sleep paralysis but some of the symptoms don't match, but I love reading articles on the topic to learn more about such a odd experience that happens to so many people.

Interesting stuff for sure, I've never heard of Nocebo before.

  4. Oh man, that was fascinating. I had just read about sleep paralysis for the first time in my son's "Ask" magazine a few days before I read this. They didn't mention the extreme dread/evil presence component. Yikes.
