Hush little darling. Daddy is going to buy your silence.

My three-year-old daughter, M, likes to have an occasional song sung to her at bedtime. She especially likes it when Krista sings "The Mockingbird Song." I've tried to sing it to her, but she tells me that I get the lyrics wrong.

Here are the lyrics according to M:

Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing.
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring don't shine,
Mama's gonna get you another diamond ring.
And if that other diamond ring don't shine,
Mama's gonna buy you another diamond ring.

And if that diamond ring don't shine,
Mama's gonna get you another diamond ring.
And if that other diamond ring don't shine,
Mama's gonna buy you another diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring don't shine,
You're still the sweetest little baby of mine.

  1. Someday when a good-hearted man asks you for her hand in marriage, you'll have to warn him about this!

  2. I got caught in the same situation when M was at our house. I could never get the lyrics correct. When I asked Krista to write them down, she told me to just look the words up on the internet. I tried the "real" lyrics on night 2 without success. What I really needed was Krista's custom version -- which now I have for future reference. On night 3, M said she would just sing to me since she knew the words.

  3. You know, you could go through an awful lot of diamond rings that way...
