It appears that birds may be able to see the earth's magnetic field, using it to navigate as they travel.

Great! one more piece of technology that will distract drivers. "but officer, I have no clue how the house got in the middle of the road. I was following the purple magnetic line to work, talking with a client on my cellphone and eating my Micky D breakfast sandwitch while sending the fax confirmation for the house we're buying."
