Jogging Advice

Okay. I need some advice from some of you insane people who are always jogging. What the heck do you people do with all the stuff from your pockets?

Here's the stuff I carry:
My MP3 player. So that I can play MP3s.

My keys. So I can get back into my house before I collapse on the porch.

My driver's license. So if I get hit by a car they know where to take my unconscious body.

My cell phone. In case I fall into a tiger pit or something.
The problem is that while I'm jogging all this junk bounces around in my pockets. And then I end up running while holding my cell phone and MP3 player in one hand and my keys in the other, which means that I am woefully unprepared if someone were, for instance, to throw me a gold brick and shout "CATCH IT AND YOU CAN KEEP IT!"

I am at an impasse. And because there are thousands of you insane joggers out there, I'm guessing there is some sort of technology or common sense solution to this problem. So... please enlighten me.

Side note: I noticed tonight while I was running that if I look off to the side instead of straight ahead -- say, to look at a bird which has startled up out of the marsh -- that my body keeps running without my eyes watching the road. Good job, body! That's a great trick.

  1. lol! personally, i have a case with a clip that i slide my license and cell phone (which is also my music) into and clip onto the waist band of my shorts/sweats. i carry a house key on a single key ring slid onto my finger. you could get one of those arm bands that holds your mp3 player . . .

  2. Hey Matt. I run with nothing in my hands at all and only have a small key pocket in my shorts. Here's how I do it.
MP3 player: get an arm band.
Keys: I only take my house key. It goes in the key pocket in my shorts, or I tie it to my shoe lace.
Driver's license: invest in a "road ID" (roadid.com) It has all your necessary info on it AND a pin number for docs and EMTs to use to obtain all your insurance and medical info online.
Cell phone: when you figure this out, let me know. I don't carry my cell phone with me.

  3. Ditto on everything Tricia Lee said. Plus:

MP3 player: some running clothes have an elastic loop in the pockets to hold your mp3 player close to your body.

Keys: You could also pass your shorts drawstring through the key before tying it into a knot.

    Happy running!!

  4. Tricia Lee has got it figured out. Get a road id. My wife feels better that I have it. Hide the keys in the flower garden. By an Iphone and arm band and you have the mp3/cell phone thing solved.

  5. My husband asked for a RoadID for his birthday. You need an armband for the mp3. What do you seriously need the cell phone for? If you really needed one, someone would loan you one.

  6. Hey Matt,

Time to return to the purest form of the sport: leave your mp3 player at home and just listen to what's around you as you run - take in the silence and stillness! Let your thoughts run along with you. Leave your cell phone at home - studies have shown that tigers kept in pits are 87% more likely to attack joggers with cell phones than without. For your own safety... leave it home. Put your license in your sock or your pocket. Just bring your house key and either tie it to your drawstring or to your shoelaces.

    Happy Running!
